Il Gioco del PonteLeading the battle
Pisa tradtionIn battle, Pisa, Italy

The battle of the bridge is an old tradition in Pisa, Italy. It is traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday in June and constitutes a battle between North and South Pisans for possession of the bridge over the River Arno. The battle is preceded by parades in traditional medieval costumes lead by a bearer holding the historical banners of their side.

The beginnings of this tradition are lost in time but naturally remain surrounded by mystery and folklore. Rumour attributes the event to the founding fathers of the city evoking an Olympic link whilst others report it back to Roman times with Hadrian attempting to inspire gladiatorial combat within the city.

The costumery however dictates that it is a medieval festival with the Spanish influenced armoury and the first written mentions of it date back to 1490. Whatever it's origins it is a matter of civic pride for the Pisans of both sides and is harmonious and celebratory in temper.

Teams must push a heavy trolley, laden with several tons of weight across the bridge to emulate battle. The team that wins the most 'battles' is proclaimed the victor. The emphasis is on strength.

During the course of its long history the event was suspended by Pietro Leopold in 1782 on the grounds of public order which would indicate that it was something of a boisterous affair. It was also interrupted by world wars and at times seemed to be relegated to the midsts of time but today it is a delightful summer festival and an excuse to dress up and have some fun, Pisan style.
