The Florentine New Year is traditionally held on the feast of the Annunciation on March 25th. It is held to celebrate the beginning of Spring and to herald the Annunciation when the archangel Gabriel is said to have told Mary that she would be the mother of Christ.
Today the celebrations feature a morning parade, medieval costumes and music with outdoor markets and an evening concert. The Santissima Annunziato church, with it's Annunciation fresco was the traditional centre for the festivities throughout the eras but, as with most religious festivals, the festivities have spilled out beyond the borders of the centres of piety.
